It is considered normal in the Cake Industry to charge more for a cake, as soon as the ‘wedding’ word is used.
I (mostly) don’t subscribe to that theory. I don’t believe in charging more than something is worth.
But wedding cake orders and working with brides can potential have a lot of ‘’add on’’ that cost you time and money and I want to make sure you cover your expenses.
For me – this was the most popular wedding cake design – 2 tier, white fondant, ribbon, heart topper and simple flowers. (I ordered in these edible flowers). This cake is 10 inch & 7 inch, with an edible cake board and I charged $350 AUD including delivery.
Wedding cakes are normally priced based on the number of guests at the wedding as well as the cake size. The individual price per slice is totally up to you. Wedding / Specialist cakes start from $2.50 and can go up to $8.50 per slice!
Tiered cakes have a price base of $5.50 a slice.
Note – wedding cakes can be sliced either ‘Desert Slices’ or ‘Coffee Slices’. The desert size is like when you are at a restaurant and the biggest mother of a slice is served to you, which takes all of your will power to eat. The coffee slices are more ‘token’ slices, just a couple of mouthfuls. Ask the bride if this is their main desert for the wedding, or reception is providing another dessert.

Be Open & Honest With Your Customers
Tell your customers (brides-to-be) about what they are paying for. They generally aren’t aware of everything that goes into a cake and it is our job to inform them! Previously I talked about the stupid cake inquiry and how to answer them. Ultimately, it is our job to inform and provide customer service!
I always tell the customer in this price you get – 3 cakes, ganache and hand colored fondant, hand sculptured details, hand painted details, shaping of cake, edible cake boards, labor, samples, 1 hour emails and GST. This helps the customer understand why a cake costs what it does!
For example –
‘’You offer original and customized designs for every customer’’
‘’Spend time to find out what each client wants’’
‘’Use only fresh and quality ingredients’’
‘’Offer free cake samples and delivery’’
‘’Using secret family recipe’’
‘’Cakes baked fresh from scratch’’

Hi, I am preparing for my 2nd wedding cake and struggling with pricing fresh flowers. I have never used them. They want a 4 tier cake to feed 160 people. What should I be charging? I’m a home baker from a small town in Tennessee. Thanks
Hi Brandi! Thanks so much for your question. I teach and use the Gross Profit Margin % + labor method for cake pricing. The most important piece to cake pricing is to first make sure that you total up all of your ingredient and supplies costs and then I recommend shooting for at least a 65% profit margin as a base price. Then I add up extra charges for my time like the time to prepare and apply fresh flowers, any special techniques used. Here is a video resource that helps explain this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBNgMDGCSx8&t=333s
