Another popular trend in 2023 was the Boho Chic cake design. Picture a cake adorned with delicate dried florals, rustic elements and paired with stunning hand-painted fans. This unconventional combination was perfect for those looking to add a touch of bohemian elegance to their special day. Embrace the free-spirited vibe inspired by nature.

The Lambeth Method, named after Joseph Lambeth, who was known for this ornate style has popped up this year. It entails using royal icing over-piping to create intricate layers of design. With dramatic scrolls and string work, this technique came about in the 1930’s and is now making a huge comeback!

Arch Cakes/”Cake Top Forward”

Just when I think I’ve seen it all…someone turns a cake on its side! The arch cake design starts out as regular round cake that is iced smoothly. Then a small slice is cut from the cake, giving it the “bottom” flat piece, the cake is turned onto its side and like magic…you have an arch! Many cake artists use acrylic disks to ice the cake and achieve sharp edges, but you can also just ice normally. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to add buttercream to the back of the cake.  Cakes by Lynz has a great tutorial here.

Square/Wall Cakes

Similar to the Arch cakes, these square/wall cakes really shake things up! Stacked tall with multiple layers of rectangular pieces of cake, finished off with buttercream, ganache, stenciling and florals, these cakes are sure to be show-stopping.   As we close out 2023 with some pretty amazing trends, I wonder what next year will bring. So, Unleash your curiosity and explore the latest cake decorating ideas, there’s always something new to discover.
