$6K in Cakes! Lessons Learned From My Biggest Revenue Month

I am excited to share something amazing with you regarding my own home-based baking business. In September of 2023, I achieved an extraordinary milestone by recording the highest monthly revenue ever, with sales reaching almost $6K!  It was an exhilarating month, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what contributed to this success, what areas need improvement, and how I plan to move forward.

First, I must mention that I don’t share this to brag but rather to inspire.

My hope with this post is to show you that it’s possible and to share what I learned from the experience.

How did I achieve this? Below is a bullet list of the steps I took for my biggest month ever.

  • Goal setting at the beginning of 2023 – I talk about SMART goals all the time, and for good reason! They work. Period. Setting Specific, Measurable, Attainable/Action-Oriented, and Time-based goals is crucial.
  • Taking inspired action – setting SMART goals is not enough, however. You must break down each goal into manageable steps and TAKE ACTION. DAILY.
  • Analysis of prior sales data and profit margins – by looking back at the sales metrics from prior years, I was able to identify the types of orders that are enjoyable for me AND have the best profit margins.
  • Focus – once I knew which orders would yield the best revenue, I then turned my focus to go after more of those. I get the best profit margins on weddings, and since I love doing these, this is a no-brainer for my business. I spent much of the year continuing to grow my relationships with wedding event venues and other industry professionals to get myself in front of more engaged couples.  I also paid more attention to my wedding cake profile on Wedding Wire & The Knot.com, making sure to reply promptly to requests for quotes and get couples scheduled as soon as possible for their tastings/consultations.

However, I need to acknowledge that this journey was not without its challenges.

To be transparent, I must admit that I experienced some stress and feelings of being overworked during the peak of the demand. It served as a reminder that proper planning is crucial for the sustainable growth of my business. Going forward, I am committed to improving my planning strategies to enhance efficiency and ensure a healthy work-life balance for myself.

While the financial rewards have been fulfilling, I also recognize that I didn’t have enough time for myself or my family. It is important to strike a balance between professional and personal commitments. Looking ahead, I am determined to carve out specific time slots for self-care and quality moments with my loved ones. I firmly believe that a well-rounded life will not only make us happier but also enhance our creativity and productivity as bakers.

Reflecting on my successes and areas for improvement has motivated me to continue setting SMART goals for the upcoming year. I am implementing a strategic growth plan that encompasses refining my planning process, investing in new equipment to optimize productivity, and expanding my reach through targeted marketing efforts. With these steps, I am confident that my baking business will continue to flourish and bring joy to even more customers.
